YESTERDAY’S SONGS by tom jensen
There is danger
Out on the street
Faces of anger
For you to meet
And some even stranger
Others you can’t see
The chosen that always were
Along with those that’ll never be
Their engines are burning
You can feel the heat
Though some keep on turning
Down a dead-end street
So here is a warning
To you from me:
Don’t ride that train
Pick your brain
Then pick a lane
And when in the rain
Don’t drown or be washed away
In the wind don’t be blown astray
It’s a sin that’ll haunt you everyday
For your end begins once you start
Singing songs about yesterday
Five days to live in a moment
Five days left before time marches on
Five days to give the breath of life
To all the words you have spoken
Five days remain until you are gone
Four days says the calendar
Now hanging before you on the wall
Four days to better know yourself
Four days to see if your life
Belongs to you or to someone else
Four days left of pacing the halls
Three days then came the hurt
And doubting of my own self-worth
Three days left that’s the time you get
To flip flop back and forth
Two days and you are feeling excited
Two days away from
the next stage of the plan
Two days until you travel back
Eager to share all you’ve learned
And the wisdom you’ve come to understand
One more day of highs and lows
One day to think about what has changed?
Inside of me I think I now know
How the rest of this story shall be told,
What shall be left out and
What shall be rearranged
