WATER BIRDS by Tom Jensen
Flying high as a gull
While you swim like a fish
Now your life isn’t dull
Did you get your wish?

Nobody really knows
Just where the feeling goes
Twelve feet off the ground
When you’re standing on your toes

Are you happy when it’s gone?
Empty mirror, empty vein
Empty bottle, empty bong

Have you had enough?
Is it getting tough?
Is the paddling rough
Shaking the stuff
Just a blind man’s bluff

Is this the last?
In a world so vast
On a street so fast
Not every second lasts
Is it time to accept the passing of the past?

Find yourself confined within the same old walls
Where the windows are still barred
Still making the same old calls
Haven’t yet made it very far

A life molded in a well-known shape
Waking up every morning staring at the same old face
Trying to find some way to escape

Some are dedicated to the flag
Others pledge allegiance to the bag
But where ever your faith lies
Keep in mind only fools are taken by surprise

Sometimes fire is the cleanser
Except when on a bender
When there’s more than just juice
On the inside of your blender

Fighting sobriety
Cracking ‘em in the jaw
Losing every ounce of dignity
While breaking every law
