UNENCUMBERED   by tom jensen
 You show me a hero
and I'll show you a dead guy
Hand me a bow and arrow
and I'll hit you a bull's eye

Drop a piano out the window
and watch the poor people
run for their pathetic little lives
Get grandma to drink the Draino
and you can buy
whatever you want to buy…

I'll be your alibi

When you look at me
and think to yourself
that I should act my age...

I look back at you
and wonder who
ever let you out of your cage?

And when all seven seas get rough
The ship’s taking on water fast
When the times get tough
Feel like your next breath
could be your last

When you’ve had enough
Forget your future
and to hell with your past
Feeling like you’re handcuffed
Chained and anchored
To the top of the mast

Since you stopped swimming
You've barely been able to tread water
Forget losing or winning
You're getting that sinking feeling
That you're washed up cannon fodder

Thinking there’s no place for me
Except for off the grid
For it shall be there
Where I'll choose to live

I shall dwell in a cave
As I barter and trade
I’ll keep to myself
And the few close
Friends I’ve made

Who says you need electricity?
Certainly nobody not from
the last past century and a half
Has ever said words like that to me

No great explorer or warrior,
high priest or king
Ever became encumbered
by the lack of such a thing

I’m a man who just needs a hug
For I’m a man who stands alone
Inside a hole which someone dug
And into which I was thrown

Lately punching the clock
Is like getting slapped in the face
Slowly wasting away the day today
Feeling ashamed and disgraced

Now I can't even
Sugar coat it...
Since everybody knows...
That I keep my gun loaded

But the fog is fading…
Clouds are burning
up in the haze

What’s left is being
blown far away
Today just may end up
being a good day...

So maybe tonight…
if the air feels right…
Together we’ll take a ride…
Up to the hillside…
And go stargazing
