TWO PAIR by Tom Jensen
We’ve been best friends for years
We’ve said all we can say
Figured we’d be at each other’s side
When it comes down to judgment day
We’ve had mud on our feet
And dirt in our eyes
But we’ve never been once
Taken by surprise
Both one in the same
Even our circle of friends
Though neither places blame
When it comes down to the end
We know the search is never easy
As you find the bottom of your drink
Though when your soul feels uneasy
Sometimes it makes you think
Would we be better…
If we never had been brothers?
Would our world be different…
Had we never met each other?
When in need of advice
Each other we seek
Yet the same hell lives on
Each week to week
Brand new day…
Same old story
We keep seeing ourselves
But the scenery’s getting boring
One hand washes the other
But the same saying goes when you play in dirt
When all is said and done you’re still my brother
Even though we keep getting hurt
A cheer full of beer
The same slap of the hand
But the older I get
The more that I understand
The questions seem to hide
When all the answers are known
Can I live the life I need with my brother
Or do I have to go it all alone?
Was that a flash of brilliance?
Or just the lightning crashing?
Do I really want to know the answer
Or should I stop myself from asking?
We’ve both seen the worst that can happen
Even through what was seemingly the best of times
Celebrated many a’ nights
Written many a’ rhymes
It may in fact be hip to be square
But unfortunately the circle keeps its shape
We still got some years
But how long will it take?
We never want to give up
On a family member taken in
But the question pops up
When you’re surrounded by sin
False gods I have never preached
By some higher power up there I truly beseech
Come to the aid of a couple of people out of reach
Whose life goal is goodness to teach
Given to the takers
Taken nothing from those who give
Do it long enough
You’ll find you way to the bridge
Surely someone, some two is out there somewhere
Women who’ll take some time for us if they truly care
As long as they never, ever expect the best
For deep down inside our nature we’re just like the rest
Because each new day we’re learning
That waiting never pays
But its so hard to get a sun tan
Without any of the sun’s rays
Just two of a kind
Waiting for two pair
We’ve never won at poker
But we know you’re out there somewhere
Biding our time by praying for the day
When you’ll reveal yourselves
Hoping that the sea’s not so rough
That we’ll have to swim it ourselves
