SONG FOR MEDIOCRITY by Tom Jensen
What is the single greatest hypocrisy?
We are lacking a song sung
In the name of mediocrity
So now we’re all blessed
Since I guessed it was up to me
To pen something
For over ninety-percent of humanity

Perhaps true happiness is just a dream?
Being great just might not be as great
As it might seem
Especially if you’re still unable to unravel the fable
And the moral of the story
Wasting your words on your former days of glory
Since all the tales that you have told
Are all recycled and old
And a preacher who isn’t following
Is the same as eating without swallowing

Never ever forgetting history
And yet still forever regretting yesterday
So far unable to just let things be
Wondering why things went this way?
When you should have been trying
To unlock the mystery
But you still begin most of your days
By screaming out, “Fu@#ing A’”
Sometimes you close your eyes
Hoping it would all go away

Since the power’s in the mind
It works both ways:
Either find your way home in the darkness
Or else be easily led astray

It takes a strong hand to turn the page
And write an all-new chapter
For you can always pick something else
If you can’t capture what you’ve been after

Yes, I guess it took awhile
Before I knew I’d never do what I wanted to do
When I looked at someone who was average
And thought to myself that, “I am just like you”

Someone says, “Power to the people”
But I just can’t find the strength today
It’s so hard to think about tomorrow
When you’re still trapped in yesterday

When will this clouded curtain lift?
When will these winds begin to shift?
You’re all so blind to what I’ve been living with
Given up trying to find a reason to live
Within the confines of the lines
Drawn up by hypocrites

Every day of my life I’ve thought like this
Lying on the floor and clenching my fists
All the time wondering why should I exist?
Pass the time trying to find some way to resist

I can’t take anything back nor start over again
I guess true happiness is just a dream
When you’re just like everybody else
Just another salmon in the river
Swimming up the stream
