SOMETHING IN THE AIR by Tom Jensen
It’s time to wake up
Awake from out of your spell
Can you smell that there’s something in the air
So familiar that I know it all too well
One must be careful
Of the company they keep
For you do not know what your mattress does
While you are asleep
There is a lobbyist sleeping in the lobby
Because somebody moved the capital down the hill
He’s busy dreaming of his new hobby
He looks like he’s dreaming still
And the man, which the lobbyist selected
His ego is inflated but still he doesn’t care
Has anyone noticed that the president we elected
His head is filled with graying hairs
The dam next to which we live
Has slowly sprung a leak
Now it’s leaking like a sieve
So it seems that the future does look bleak
Old men who have
Already lived a lifetime
Still believe that they get better with age
But sour grapes do not make a fine wine
Our grandfathers are all CEO’s
While grandchildren watch music videos
Busy losing touch with reality
Both the past and future is scaring me
You either have too much
Or there’s too little gained
Seems that ain’t nothing changed
It’s the same old problems again
It’s time to wake up
Can you smell something in the air?
I went to ask my father
But I saw he wasn’t there
The infection of money
Is never quick to cease
It keeps on spreading and spreading
Like some airborne disease
Throw away those phony pills
Try blowing your nose with dollar bills
You could be poor and cured
Or sick filthy rich
So much for any placebo
To hell with jumping ship
You would rather hit the casino
And sit there counting chips
It seems that daddy works seven days a week
Even though us kids have plenty to eat
Mommy teaches and cooks
And reads us books
It’s time to wake up
Awake from out of your spell
Can you smell that there’s something in the air?
I guess that only a few of us can tell
