SHEPHERD by Tom Jensen
Trapped in this invisible cage
Forced to live within the confinement of society
Walking along the roads that they paved
Worshipping the idols that they made
Stray too far from the master’s eye
He will yank on your leash causing you to yelp
Free thought and free expression
Has such a cost that few will dare pay
And if they choose to pay then they are branded
With the devil’s conceit and called underhanded
Sacrificed for the good of the many
So that none will step out of line
The courageous have been exiled
To the land where there are no sheep
Only wolves
Just where they would want a shepherd to reside
Where only the birds hear his words
And only the stars heed his call
Off in a foreign land of languages
That no one understands
He cries to the moon and prays to the sun
Tears and prayers never answered
The master must have his hand upon them too
But one day the master will fall asleep
Leaving unherded all of his sheep
For even Achilles had his heal
And to God even the Pope must kneel
‘Tis then that the shepherd will raise his cane
Time for Abel to see the face of Cain
No longer will the people be deceived
As the true shepherd shall finally be received
It shall then become known as evident
To every resident
That there is no need for any priests or presidents
The shepherd will unite
As the master urges all to fight
The battle lines will then be drawn up
As wrong verses right
But the color of blood
Will drip shades of gray
The true color of the people
Is neither white nor black
As they slowly turn red
The day is coming
The shepherd is back
The day the master dreads
