LAND OF COAL by Tom Jensen
Some say these are the best years of my life
So I ask why they’re so full of unsettlement and strife
So busy working my fingers down to the bone
That so tired I am I only sleep when I get home
Been like this for years it seems one day repeats itself
Over and over again so much so that I begin to doubt myself
This monotonous circle, so on and on this hero’s saga goes
Leading my way through the wilderness filled with highs and lows
Following a light, my guide
That not everyone possesses the courage to find
But why is it that even in the daylight
Some things can make you think you’re blind?
Feet so bloody from walking
A tongue so tired from talking
A brain so wired from thinking
My eyes so weak from blinking
Give up, for this is much more than you can take
Sleep through all your dreams just to know you are awake
Bow your head as you crawl your way back to your cave
Chalk it up to one more man you know you could not save
Maybe yesterday was the day you finally realized
That there is nothing that happens in this world that can take you by surprise
Once you look deep inside the depths of your soul
You’ll know there are no diamonds in this land of coal
There are miners out there somewhere
Yet their fingers still have failed to touch
You don’t believe the stories you often hear
You may be fooled a little sometimes but not all that much
