HIDING THE DIRT by Tom Jensen
Cleanse me from the dirt I hide
Then buckle me safe on this bumpy ride
If you try to look inside of my soul
You'll see that it is blackened coal
Let this darkness fade...let the sunlight in
Since metaphors are my only friends
When all the people have come and gone
All that's left is what I had all along

The only voices I can now hear are the ones inside of my head
Some are distant and others near
Please tell me the reason they never let me forget
Unentrap me from this...this mental maze
Release me from my confining cage

Oh won't you help me find the key so I can swim back to the sea
Where I can then begin to set all my troubles free
If a pearl is buried inside me... try to pry me open and show it to me
Then no longer would I watch you all so enviously
Rather than feeling bitter about what has happened to me

For I would pleasure you with loyalty
Rather than watching you all so jealously
Would you believe that I was once royalty?
Before I became frozen here in time
And chosen by rhyme and poetry

Cleanse me from the dirt I hide
Then buckle me safe on this bumpy ride
If you try to look inside of my soul
You'll see that it is blackened coal
Let this darkness fade...let the sunlight in
Since metaphors are my only friends

When all the people have come and gone
All that's left is what I had all along
